Deep in the lush rainforests of French Guiana, scientists have made an exciting discovery — five brand new species of land snails. These tiny creatures had never been documented before, showing just how much there is still to learn about the natural world.
The Big Discovery
Between 1995 and 2020, researchers traveled to different parts of French Guiana, searching through the leaf litter and undergrowth to find hidden species. Their hard work paid off when they identified five new types of snails, each with its own unique characteristics.
The newly discovered species are:
- Adelopoma quasimodo – Named after Quasimodo, the famous hunchbacked character from “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame,” this snail has a distinctive shell shape that makes it stand out.
- Lilloiconcha galbao – A tiny snail with a delicate, round shell, found in the Galbao region.
- Protoglyptus bernicolae – This species belongs to the Bulimulidae family and has a beautifully patterned shell.
- Pseudosubulina santi – Discovered near a banana plantation, this snail is one of the largest of the new species, measuring about one centimeter in length.
- Happia decaensi – This species is special because it represents the first time the genus Happia has been found in French Guiana.
